Since day one, Finisterre has taken a pioneering approach to make better and more sustainable products, challenging and innovating, seeking alternatives to what has gone before.
Each year, it’s estimated that 8 million metric tons of plastic ends up in our oceans, this is why Finisterre believe that single-use is no use and in 2018 they made a commitment to eradicate single-use, non-degradable plastic at Finisterre.
This October, Finisterre have taken their commitment and innovation efforts even further by partnering with Aquapak, a polymer manufacturer whose mission has been to create a plastic technology which has full functionality as a packaging solution in the modern world but is 100% water-soluble, recyclable, compostable and biodegradable. In an ideal world, this packaging would not be necessary, but it’s essential to keep products protected on their journey. As the last piece of non-degradable plastic in their packaging, Finisterre made a conscious decision to find a better solution.
“The amount of pollution from traditional plastic packaging has, understandably, been a source of concern across the world. Many years of research and development have enabled Aquapak to develop an alternative that gives all the functionality of widely-used plastic whilst addressing the concerns they bring” Dr John Williams, Technical & Business Development Director, Aquapak Polymers.
Both parties have come together to tackle plastic pollution head-on and deliver dissolvable packaging which breaks down harmlessly into non-toxic biomass in soil and sea. “To see the completion of this project and the last 10 months’ work, is one of the most exciting moments in my career to date, to be able to launch something so groundbreaking and literally world-changing is an honour. To be partnered with Aquapak, leading the way for future generations is unbelievably inspiring” says Niamh O’Laoighre, Product Development Manager at Finisterre.
The new packaging will begin to enter the supply chain with select knitwear lines this October, before a full roll out in February, where the packaging will be included with all garments in the spring 2020 collection. Mark Lapping Chief Executive Officer at Aquapak Polymers celebrates that “the science behind our products is a solution to the world’s plastic crisis and we are delighted that Finisterre is our first adopter in the European fashion world. We’ve worked with their packaging suppliers in Europe and Asia to use Aquapak’s material in their existing machines so its use can be extended to Finisterre’s whole range”.
