Columbia Sportswear Company (Nasdaq: COLM) is proud to announce its 93-year-old Chairman, Gert Boyle, is the recipient of the 2018 ISPO Cup in recognition of her astounding achievements in the world of sports. The award was presented at ISPO Munich 2018, the largest gathering for the international sports industry in Munich, Germany.
The honor was revealed at a gala dinner event January 30, 2018, showcasing Boyle’s impressive career and lengthy list of achievements. Accepting the award on her behalf was her son Tim Boyle, President and CEO of Columbia Sportswear Company. Several other well-respected industry personalities shared congratulatory messages in-person and via video compilations with the audience.
“I am honored to accept the ISPO Cup on behalf of my one tough mother, Gert,” said Tim Boyle, President and Chief Executive Officer, Columbia Sportswear Company. “This award is well-deserved and a reflection of the countless obstacles she has fearlessly faced and surmounted, and the lifetime of hard work she has poured into making Columbia Sportswear the global company it is today.”
Each year, the ISPO Cup award is given to one individual that over the course of a career or lifetime, demonstrates a unique and lasting contribution to the world of sport. Past recipients include soccer legend Pele, ski and fashion designer Willy Bogner, ski icon Jean-Claude Killy, and champion sprinter Wilma Rudolph, the only other American to be honored since the awards began in 1971.
Gert Boyle is the first ever non-athlete to ever receive the ISPO Cup. Born in Augsburg, Germany and escaping the growing Nazi regime as a young girl, this recognition is a powerful representation of Boyle’s life coming full circle. Winning the ISPO Cup is especially meaningful as Columbia is celebrating the 80th anniversary of its founding in 1938.
“I’m deeply honored to be awarded the 2018 ISPO Cup,” said Gert Boyle, Chairman of Columbia Sportswear Company. “As I think back to my years in Germany as a young girl, I could have never dreamed of this recognition almost 90 years later. Thank you to ISPO for this recognition, and to my family.”
